Default Electric fan install
by 82ram150 11-02-2011, 09:36 PM

I will be showing you how to replace your old mechanical fan on your ram with an electric one.

Things you will need:
-butt connectors
-spade connectors
-wire cutters
-drill
-switch
-screw drivers
-assorted wrenches
-relay
-electrical tape
-flat bar with pre drilled holes
-bolts, nots and washers
-in line fuse
-electric fan(s)
Install:

-First thing to do is unbolt your radiator schroud and mechanical fan then remove them.
-Take your electric fan(s) and test fit them to see if you need to make a bracket for them.
-If so, take your flat bar with the pre cut holes and measure and cut what you need to be able to mount the fans.
-After making your brackets test fit the fan(s) with the brackets and bolts.
-After you are satisfied with your brackets and the location of the fan(s) tighten all bots /screws down.
-Next figure where you where you want to mount your relay.
-To wire the relay #30 is your power source from your fuse. #87 is to the fan(s). #86 is from your switch. #85 is grounded.
-Next step is to hook up your switch to a positive source and try out your fans.

Pics:

I havent been able to fill up yet so i cannot tell you if i have any fuel economy gains or not but my truck does warm up a LOT quicker even when it was 36*F.

that is pretty cool. so does it seem to pull enough air? also how is it power wise? does it make the amp gauge move a ton or no worse than when you turn your headlights?

My ammeter doesn't really move. But at idle when you turn the fans on it drops about 50rpms so a little less draw than having my four driving lights on. Over all with all lights on, fans on, heater on and stereo on, at idle it drops about 150rpms, which IMO isn't too bad for as much draw there is from everything.

lol. that is kind of funny. so do they seem to pull air good and are you running 1 or both of them at the same time?

Im running both off the switch, i didnt want to mess with splitting the wiring. They pull a heck of a lot more air than the single fan did.

i think you will probably see it more if you are doing more highway driving than you would in city since you will probably be able to leave the fans off when traveling on the highway.

heck ive hardly had them on at all its been so cool out. The only time i turned them on was when i was sitting with the engine off waiting for my brother to get out of school. Then sitting at a long stop light. other than that it stays plenty cool with them off and it got up to 57 today.

so have you had a chance to see if there has been any improvements? i topped up on Sunday and so far it has not hurt my gas mileage but i have yet to see a great improvement. you were right about hardly ever needing them. i have not really had mine on at all. i am thinking about getting a more accurate temp gauge just to be sure i am not over heating the engine.

I filled up tonight. And I saw a 2mpg improvement to 13mpg. I am a very aggressive driver and I do tend to show off a lot. Keeping the same driving habits and seeing that improvement really surprised me. I think I will drive more sane on this tank and see what I can get.
