My mom ended up buying from me. Did a full tuneup on it and it still had the miss. Took it to my local Dodge guru and found out the valley pan gasket was blown. Should have it fixed by the middle of next week.
On the plus side, I took what she paid me for the van and bought me an 89 Ramcharger ![]()

that is why i always post about the plenum gasket when magnum engines come up. it can cause strange things to happen. must have been a pretty good leak if it was causing a miss. i know i plan on fixing mine soon. got a spare intake that i am going to clean up and hope i can get the whole thing done in no time. just waiting for the snow to get lost.

Ya it was a pretty good leak. He said it was actually causing a vacuum in the crank case! Apparently the excess air was causing the comp to go haywire dumping WAY too much fuel into #8 and fouling out the plug.

Got some bad news today. The valley pan gasket was blown BAD! He said there was at least a 5" section of the gasket missing. They got it repaired and the miss was still there, so they pressurized the cyl with shop air. It blew straight back out of the intake, so the intake valve is stuck open

that don't sound very good. never heard of a gasket doing this. too bad they didn't get some pictures. this would be interesting to see. i know there is a thread on dodge forum dedicated to posting leaking plenum gasket pictures.

I'd never heard of it either, but he said he'd seen one do something similar before (just not to that extent). He was the shop foreman at a Dodge dealer for 20+ years, so I trust him to know what's going on with it. Hopefully it's just something stuck in the valve or at worst a bent valve stem or cracked seat. He said there were no bubbles in the coolant when he put the shop air to it, so it shouldn't be the head just in the valve train.

So we found out what was causing the miss....
The exhaust valve had about a 1/4" triangle shaped chunk out of it ![]() The head, block, pistons and the rest of the valves looked fine. No idea what caused the damage or where the piece of the valve went ![]()
